A student and friend of Henri Matisse, Purrmann co-founded the Paris painting school "Académie Matisse" and operated the German art foundation at the Villa Romana in Florence from 1935, his oeuvre comprising still lifes, nudes, portraits and light-flooded southern landscapes.

Some traces of folds, most prominent near lower left corner; a few small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
