John Blackwood was editor of "Blackwood's Magazine", a Tory-supporting miscellany, originally called the "Edinburgh Monthly Magazine". He is credited with discovering the genius of George Eliot, whose works he undertook to publish and which whom he enjoyed an intimate friendship.
