Beautiful manuscript of Desbordes-Valmore's short poem on love and hope that was first published in the 1834 anthology of female-authored poems "L'Opale", beginning: "Je t'écrirai toujours, ne fût-ce que des larmes : | Je t'enverrai mon nom qui signa tant d'amour : | Mets-le dans ta prière, et jusqu'à ton retour | Le tien me servira d'appui dans mes alarmes. | Si Dieu le veut, tu reviendras ; | Et mes pleurs, tu les essuieras ! [...]". As a motto, Desbordes-Valmore uses a quote from the first act of Victor Hugo's "Hernani": "Vous me manquez, je suis absente de moi-même".

It appears that the manuscript is the fair copy for the first publication. The number "4" in the upper left corner corresponds to its placement within "L'Opale". In 1843, Desbordes-Valmore republished the poem in a minimally changed version within the anthology "Bouquets et prières". A manuscript of this later version is held by the French National Library (Ms 1063-2 f. 5).

Minimally stained.
