On Jena waterworks and Seebeck’s magnetism-galvanism experiments

To the chemist Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner (1780-1849) in Jena, requesting information for the Duke of Weimar on analyses of water from a Jena spring intended for the new hospital, and asking for the results of any experiments. Goethe further reports “very fine communications” from Dr. Thomas Johann Seebeck on the newly discovered relation between magnetism and galvanism and proposes that Döbereiner repeat the experiments, with apparatus costs to be borne by the Ducal Museum, while urging confidentiality until Seebeck publishes: "Ew. Wohlgeb. haben von Serenissimo ein Paar Flaschen Wasser einer Jenaischen Quelle erhalten, die man ins neue Krankenhaus zu leiten gedenkt. Höchstdieselben tragen mir auf nachzufragen: ob Dieselben sich damit beschäftigt? Mögen Sie mir davon einige Kenntniss geben und allenfalls die Resultate der Versuche übersenden. Von H. Dr. Seebeck habe sehr schöne Mittheilungen über das neuentdeckte Verhältniss des Magnetismus zum Galvanismus. Wären Sie wohl geneigt solche zu wiederholen, so wollte ich die Kosten des allenfallsigen Apparats, die nicht groß seyn können, aus der Museums Kasse tragen; nur müsste bitten nichts davon öffentlich bekannt zu machen, damit man Herrn Seebeck nicht vorgreife, der den Aufsatz, wie er sagt, nächstens wird drucken lassen [...]". The letter is written in the hand of Goethe’s secretary John, closed with Goethe’s autograph subscription “ergebenst JWvGoethe”.

A revealing witness to Goethe’s active patronage of the sciences in Weimar and to his close collaboration with Döbereiner at a pivotal moment in early electromagnetism, this attractive document links Weimar administrative concerns with cutting-edge experimental physics and chemistry in 1821. Seebeck’s work on the magnetism of the galvanic circuit would appear in print shortly thereafter.
