Unauthorised Russian translation of Ian Fleming’s "Dr No", produced and circulated clandestinely as samizdat. Issued long before any sanctioned Soviet edition, it reflects the appetite for western popular fiction during and after the Thaw and the parallel economy of underground texts.
The translator remains anonymous for obvious legal reasons; unattributed samizdat translations commonly drew on briefly accessed originals or borrowed copies, and carbon copy multiplication left only small numbers in private hands.
The present copy’s plain typographic mise en page, uneven strike, and untrimmed leaves are fully characteristic of Soviet typescript circulation.
A vivid artefact of Cold War reading culture and the early reception of the James Bond phenomenon behind the Iron Curtain; the novel had entered mass consciousness via film from 1962, but printed Russian access remained extralegal until Perestroika.
From a Novosibirsk private collection. The scientific enclave of Akademgorodok was a major hub for samizdat circulation in the 1960s/70s, with privileged access to typewriters and foreign material.
Very good, gently handled. Leaves clean and supple; boards with light shelfwear only.
Not in Barbakadze Antologiia samizdata (2005). No legal Russian Fleming editions recorded before 1989.
