Constantinople, imprimerie du "Levant Times & Shipping Gazette", 1873.

Folio (280 x 355 mm). 3 consecutively paginated parts in one vol. 319, (1), VII, (1) pp. With 74 plates after photographs by Sébah. Early 20th century half morocco with giltstamped spine title.

 25.000,00

First edition. The three sections are devoted to "Turquie d'Europe" (including Greece), "Ilas ottomanes" (including Cyprus), and "Turquie d'Asie" (including Mecca and the Lebanon). The plates are based on studio portrait photographs by Pascal Sébah (1823-86), then at his peak.

Sébah's Istanbul studio catered to the western European interest in the exotic "orient" and the growing numbers of tourists visiting the Muslim world who wished to take home images of the cities, ancient ruins in the surrounding area, portraits, and local people in traditional costumes. "Sebah rose to prominence because of his well-organized compositions, careful lighting, effective posing, attractive models, great attention to detail, and for the excellent print quality" (Gary Saretzky).

Occasional brownstaining, otherwise a good copy.
