Technical paper on the Dukhan deep test presented at the First Arab Petroleum Congress in Cairo in 1959. The deep test well in the Dukhan oilfield in Qatar was an elaborate operation to find oil zones deeper than any previously known to exist in the Gulf region. Completed in 1960, the well reached a depth of 13,260 feet, but failed to reveal any underlying productive strata. Even though the Dukhan field remained a good source of oil, it became apparent that Qatar would not retain its place among the major oil producers for long. Instead, the discovery of offshore gas in 1972 propelled the small Emirate into the top league of natural gas producers.

The paper discusses the casing programme, hydraulics, cementing and mud techniques, the proposed equipment and required labour force to dig the well, as well as the anticipated cost of the project.

Library stamp of the University College of North Staffordshire to front cover, title-page, and first page. Marked "Gen. 6." by hand near top right corner. Small creases near spine and top left corner. Otherwise fine.
