To the French artist Saint-Aubin, suspecting he has forgotten their agreement that Saint-Aubin present him with a Venus and a plate of antique gems in exchange for receiving a copy of his first printed work. He suggests Saint-Aubin hand over the Venus, well wrapped, to the bearer of the present letter, unless he values his own work more highly than Diderot's and suspects he has struck a bad deal: "M. de Saint-Aubin a oublié qu'il y a entre lui et moi un traité. Je dois lui envoyer le premier ouvrage qu'on imprimera de moi. Lui doit m'accorder en échange une Vénus Anadyomène et sa seconde petite planche des pierres antiques. Si cet oubli vient de ce qu'il estime plus son ouvrage que le mien et de ce qu'il croit avoir fait un mauvais marché, il a raison Si ce n'est pas cela, il remettra la Vénus au proteur, bien enveloppée de manière que sa main sale et grossière ne puisse la gâter [...]".
