A wide-ranging compendium of four works on Islamic jurisprudence, linguistics, and the early development of algebra by four different authors, including Imam Al Haramain al-Juwayni and the mathematician al-Qalasadi.
The first work in the manuscript is "Kashf al-asrar ‘an ‘ilm huruf al-ghobar" by Abu'l-Hasan ibn Ali al-Qalasadi (1412-86 CE), an Andalusian mathematician who specialized in Islamic jurisprudence. It contains the earliest known examples in arithmetic and algebra of operational and equation simplification, as well as the first use of abbreviated symbolic notation.
The penultimate and final part of the work contain both the original text and a commentary on "al-Waraqat fi usul al-fiqh" written by Imam al Haramain al-Juwayni (1028-85 CE), a renowned Shafi'i scholar who was considered the second founder of the Shafi'i school. He counted the great polymath al-Ghazali (Algazelus) among his numerous students and wrote numerous books on Islamic jurisprudence. This text is followed by its commentary by Ibn Qasim al-Abadi (d. 1584 CE), a well-known Egyptian grammarian, teacher, and jurist who wrote several commentaries mainly in Shafi'i jurisprudence.
The manuscript further includes a commentary on "al-Adhudiyah" ("The Adhudi Letter"), a significant treatise on dialectics and the linguistic expression of concepts by the Persian philosopher 'Adudaddin 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ahmad al-Iji (ca. 1281-1355 CE). The author of this commentary, the theologian, jurist, mathematician, and astronomer Ali Qushji (1403-74 CE), was best known for his development of astronomical physics independently from natural philosophy and for providing evidence for the Earth’s rotation.
A fine manuscript collection that reflects the comprehensive education of North African Muslim scholars in the eighteenth century, ranging from Islamic jurisprudence to algebra, and serves as testament to the pioneering nature of their works.
Some worming throughout, mainly confined to margins; last page soiled. Edges trimmed during rebinding with numerous early marginalia preserved on fold-outs. In very good condition altogether.
