The index volume to the first 17 volumes of the Transactions of the Bombay Geographical Society as published between 1844 and 1866. The secretary of the Society and editor of the Transactions since 1859 had been D. J. Kennelly, who resigned his post in 1866 upon retiring from service in India. He did, however, succeed in completing the present index to all Transaction volumes so far published - to this day an invaluable book of reference to contributing authors and subjects not limited to the Indian subcontinent, but including articles on Arabia, Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. It further contains the list of members as well as the Society's library and map catalogue.

The abolition of the Indian Navy in 1863 proved a fatal blow to the Bombay Geographical Society, though it continued its activities for a full decade, closing only in January 1873, when it formed a geographical section of the Royal Asiatic Society's Bombay Branch. The 19th and final volume of Transactions appeared in 1874; no further index volume was produced.

Binding a little rubbed, but generally in excellent condition. Presentation copy, handsomely bound by the Society for Kennelly, with a lithographed presentation bookplate, dated 1866, pasted to front pastedown.
