Two classified maps of Oman prepared for military use by the U.S. National Imagery and Mapping Agency; marked "for official use only": an incredibly detailed city plan of Salalah, labelled "property of the U.S. Army [...] Counterintelligence Center", displaying the third-largest city in the Sultanate of Oman, and the largest city in the Dhofar province. The map includes the then-undeveloped Awqad neighbourhood prior to the establishment of Khor Salalah Natural Reserve, indicates landmarks such as Al Hosn Palace and the Clock Tower next to places of worship like Al Shanfari mosque. The area of Sultan Qaboos Mosque, completed in 2001 and the largest mosque in Salalah today, is still shown undeveloped. The map further indicates commercial and government buildings, embassies and consulates, schools, hospitals, hotels, banks, markets, cinemas, golf and tennis courts, stadiums and other places of interest.
The second map shows Thumrait Air Base, a station of the Royal Air Force of Oman. Originally an oil depot, RAFO Thumrait was created to establish air power in that region of Oman. The base has been used by U.S., UK and Allied air forces to support operations during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm during the Gulf War, and later during the War in Afghanistan. The map indicates aviation maintenance and repair facilities, radio and control towers, antennas, bunkers, barracks and tents as well as recreational facilities such as swimming pools and tennis courts.
In excellent condition.
