Owen, a supporter of Lamarck and scientific opponent of Darwin, was well-known for creating (with the support of Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins) the first life-size sculptures depicting dinosaurs as they might have appeared: some of them were initially created for the Great Exhibition of 1851.
