Karl von Bruck was Austrian minister of commerce, reformed the postal and consular systems, instigated the development of Austrian trade law and created the Trieste marine agency and stock exchange. He did not live to materialize his plans for a central European commercial union which was to bring the customs, currency and tax systems of the German states and Austria into agreement. Wrongly accused of having personally enriched himself in his office, he was dismissed as minister of finance by the Emperor and took his own life.
