Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Ich erfülle Ihnen den geäußerten Wunsch gern [...]".
Exhibiting his portrait of Frederick the Great even as a student in 1868, Meyer created etchings of masterpieces by Raffael, Rubens and Velazquez, as well as an 18-sheet cycle titled "Totentanz", which constitutes one of his main works. He taught etching and engraving at the Berlin Academy.
Some ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
