A trove of more than 450 formulae for various ointments, balms, elixirs, powders, tinctures, pills, essences, potions, and other kinds of medicines, with remarks on their usage and administration. Includes remedies for common diseases including scurvy, gout, gonorrhea, scabies, kidney stones, and even the plague (for which a rather peculiar "plague vinegar" is prescribed, a mixture of wine vinegar, garlic, sage, rosemary, lavender and other herbs). While the manuscript is written in the vernacular, the use of Latin names for the components of the drugs and their complexity point to a professional author, most likely a physician who prepared the book during his studies and used it as a manual in his daily practice. Prepared by one main hand with scattered additions by later owners.

Gifted to the German physician Joseph Höhn, possibly by his teacher Dr. Sauer, upon concluding his studies in 1818. A Joseph Höhn, "surgeon 1st class", is recorded as active in Bamberg, Franconia, in 1838. Notes to both flyleaves state that Höhn later gifted the book to a colleague, the Augsburg physician Johann Anton Mayer.

Spine damaged, lacking small portions of the calf binding. Extremities somewhat rubbed. Interior in fine condition.
