Inscribed by the author of the definitive biography of the great Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), and by Mahler's own nephew, Alfred Rosé. It is Rosé's inscription which introduces the work, which he gifts to his friends Roger and Mary Ellen Gustavson: "I have collaborated for 15 years with the author of this book on my uncle Gustav Mahler. You will find a most definite biography of the composer and you will find me mentioned frequently".

Mahler's biographer, Henry-Louis La Grange (1924-2017), was a renowned French musicologist; his monumental biography of Mahler, whom he calls "a musical prophet of doom", made him famous. La Grange inscribes the book again to the Gustavsons, apparently after the passing of Rosé: "in memory of our beloved friend Alfred Rosé and our most enjoyable meetings in his house!".

A nice copy, doubly inscribed by the biographer and nephew of the great Austro-Bohemian composer.
