An uncommon late 19th century Urdu guide to Varanasi (Benares), including a lithograph plate of Aurangzeb's mosque, with its now-destroyed minarets still intact.

Varanasi, known for its great antiquity, was famous throughout the subcontinent. Part guide and part history, the plates also include portraits of the famous men of Varanasi, such as Maharaja Balwant Singh (1711-70), and scenes from around the city: the famous riverfront, the temples, and more.

Condition

Lacking spine, binding beginning to separate. Traces of former block-stitching.
