Rare lecture on the Khedive Ismail Bridge, a historical swing bridge structure dating from 1931 which replaced the first bridge to span the Nile River in central Cairo. The lecture was given at the Royal Egyptian Society of Engineers on 14 April 1932. The plates show construction plans and the proposed design of the new bridge, including details such as the four bronze lion statues at the east and west approaches to the bridge. They are late 19th-century works by Henri Alfred Jacquemart (1824-96), French sculptor and animalier.
Renamed "Qasr El Nil" after the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, the bridge connects Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo, on the east bank of the river, to the southern end of Gezira/Zamalek Island. The foundation stone was laid by King Fuad I on 4 February 1931, and after over two years of construction it was inaugurated on 6 June 1933.
Wrappers somewhat worn, a few small tears and traces of library stickers. Marginal tears to title-page and lower flyleaf. Only a single copy listed in institutions worldwide, at the American University in Cairo.
Calligraphic invitation to a lecture on the future of oil in Arabia, given by Professor Abdullah al-Tariqi (1919-97) at the University of Beirut on 29 April 1965. A native of Saudi Arabia, al-Tariqi was Director General of Petroleum and Mineral Affairs in the Ministry of Finance and National Economy from 1954. As such, he was responsible for relations with the only oil company then existing in Saudi Arabia, the Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO), which had received a concession in 1933, first found oil in 1938, and began extraction at the end of World War II. In 1960 al-Tariqi became Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Affairs, but in 1962 a clash within the Saudi ruling elite cost him both his post and his ARAMCO board membership. He left Saudi Arabia, co-founded an independent oil consultancy in Beirut, and propounded his view that oil is a global rather than country-by-country issue that needs a united Arab solution vis-à-vis the West.
