Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.
Born Charles Auguste Émile Durand in Lille, the painter adopted the name "Carolus-Duran" upon moving to Paris in 1853. From 1870 onwards he applied himself almost entirely to portraiture and opened his own studio on Boulevard du Montparnasse, where he also operated a painting school.
Lower left corner slightly creased. Self-addressed by the collector. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
