First printing of this polemical apology against Johann Friedrich Mayer. The Saxon theologian and orientalist Abraham Hinkelmann (1652-95) became deacon of St. Nikolai in Hamburg in 1685; in spite of sharp criticism by his Hamburg adversaries, who attacked him for his sympathy for Spener and Pietism, he was made head pastor of St. Catharine's in 1689. "But when in 1690 and especially in 1693 the well-known Pietist disputes broke out in Hamburg, Hinckelmann and his friends Winckler and Horbius were attacked by the notorious Johann Friedrich Mayer (a former friend from Wittenberg) and his associaties in a way that defies description" (cf. ADB 12, 461). Hinckelmann was also an exegete of Jakob Böhme's; his special contribution to scholarship is his preparation of the first complete printed Arabic Qur'an, also printed in 1694.
