Vues de Vienne. Eglises, places publiques, Rues, Monumens. Collection des gravures. [Verso: Album-Souvenir].

[Vienna, c. 1855].

Small oblong 8vo (145 x 105 mm). 24 views engraved in steel (87:50 mm each) laid down on decorated backing paper. Original coloured portfolio.

 3,500.00

Both series of these charming views, probably printed by A. Payne, all mounted on the original backing paper and stored within the perfectly preserved original moirée portfolio printed in blue and gold. The unnumbered engravings, all with captions below, are individually laid down on toned slips of paper with ornamental and figural decoration (each with slight design variations) and bear no reference to printer, artist, or publisher. Apart from the conventional sights of Vienna, the present series features views of the Südbahnhof, the Polytechnical Institute, the Neue Markt and Casino, the Paradiesgarten, the Villa Metternich, the Ferdinandsbrücke with Jägerzeile, and the inn "Zum goldenem Lamm", all perfect as issued; the view of Lobkowitzplatz alone is somewhat shaded with dust towards the edges. Nebehay/Wagner follow the copy of the Vienna City Library in dividing the whole into two series of twelve views each (all present here). No further copy could be traced through library or collection catalogues; merely Gilhofer offered 12 views of the present series in its 1983 centenary catalogue (100 Jahre Gilhofer: Österreich, Geographie, Topographie und Geschichte in illustrierten Werken, no. 142 [with full-page illustration]: "Von großer Seltenheit".)
