Beautiful correspondence with an intimate friend in Vienna, reflecting important steps of Ramazotti's ecclesiastical career. In the earliest letter from 27 January 1856, Ramazotti was still bishop of Pavia. Asking his friend to organize accommodation in Vienna, should he be called there in connection with the recently concluded concordat, Ramazzotti speaks of his very limited means as the "bishops here are, by love and by necessity, professors of exalted poverty" and he had to pledge "a conspicuous sum for the continuation of the works on the cathedral". But, to continue on a lighter note, he cryptically jokes that he has "one of the best possessions of a table that lets the river Po eat half of it to eat him with the other half," probably also referring to the financial problems of the diocese. Despite all this, he would even go to see his friend in Vienna with "only one foot," and sends greetings to an Imperial councelor named Maria Noy.

When Ramazotti was designated to become Patriarch of Venice, he wrote a beautiful letter to his friend in Vienna, expressing his conflicting feelings of gratitude towards Pope Pius IX and doubt: "In questi giorni nei quali il mio cuore è assai commosso, mi è caro avere anche lontano un amico al quale possa aprirlo con confidenza questo mio cuore benedetto. Io mi trovo in quello stato che ti puoi immaginare. Temo, spero vorrei andando a Venezia farvi del bene... ma se quella invece fosse una sede dove Dio riservasse un po' d'onore mondano, ma sterilità d'opere buone ad un povero vescovo, che fu inerte nell'operar il bene dove il campo era più opportuno...! Io ho rimessa la decisione di quello che devo fare al Santo Padre. Questo però non impedisce che il mio cuore senta con viva riconoscenza tutto l'amore e la fedeltà che io devo al mio Sovrano anche per questo nuovo tratto della sua bontà verso di me [...]" (Pavia, 28 February 1858).

The final letter from 4 April 1861, just a few months before Ramazotti's death, concerns an upcoming visit to Vienna for a meeting of the Imperial council. The Patriarch asks his friend to inquire with a redemptorist named Ligoriani if the monastery can accommodate him and some other bishops: "Siccome sarà bene che anch'io venga a Vienna per la prossima riunione del Consiglio dell'Impero, quantunque e per la mancanza della cognizione della lingua tedesca e per la mancanza di qualunque altra cognizione io veda benissimo che vi potrò far ben poco di bene. Così ti prego di andare a parlare al Superiore dei P.B. Redentoristi a Ligoriani per vedere se vorrebbero aver la bontà di darmi alloggio. Ti prego di dimandare se avrebbero posto anche per qualche altro vescovo. Spero che mi risponderai presto. " - The facade and the dome of the Pavia Cathedral were only built in the 19th century with some works continuing well into the 20th, depleting the diocese's finances. The 1st concordat between the Holy See and Austria had been concluded in 1855. The recipient was probably a high ranking Austrian diplomat or magistrate who was involved in the negotiations for the concordat.
