"Armée Mexicaine 1".
No place, c. 1885.
8vo. German accordion-folded manuscript on paper with 10 mounted pencil drawings coloured by hand. Contemporary cloth with giltstamped title on upper cover.
A hand-drawn album showing the uniforms of the Austrian Volunteer Corps in Mexico under Emperor Maximilian I. The drawings are artistically simple, but quite detailed, and show officers (including Hussars and Uhlans), medics and musicians, almost all in their typical uniform of red trousers and blue jackets. Under each drawing there is a brief handwritten caption recording the military rank. Unlike the uniforms, the landscapes in the background are not watercoloured.
Provenance
From the library of Hachenburg Castle in the Westerwald, with their stamp.
Condition
Hinges professionally restored.
