"I praise the Olympian gods"

Schliemann, Heinrich, German archaeologist (1822-1890). Autograph letter signed ("HSchliemann").

Paris, 10 April 1878.

Large 8vo. 1 p. on bifolium.

To the ophthalmic surgeon William Bowman, explaining that he did not call due to the sudden illness of his wife and referring to the success of Bowman’s cold water douche on Schliemann’s eyes and to his order for spectacles: "[...] I praise the Olympian gods that I addressed myself to you for your cold water douche has a marvellous effect on my eyes. I forgot the name of the Optician in Bond Street. When you pass his magazine, pray, inform him of the circumstances which impeded me to call again for the spectacles ordered, and of my intention to return to London as soon as Mrs S’s state permits my absence [...]".

The letter on bluish paper is in very good condition and clearly legible.
