An den Schriftsteller und Journalisten Robert Breuer (1909-96): "As to the question of German words in English, all students of language have to reconcile themselves to the fact that usage determines what is correct in the long run, and if the American people decide to use German words in a certain way, the Germans have to reconcile themselves to this no matter how barbarous it sounds to them. The same thing applied to the use of American words by the Germans, or by the French or any other people. For example, the French use the American phrase high life, but they choose to pronounce it higgleef, which sounds rather silly to us but means something to the French. Robert Breuer war bis zu seiner Emigration 1938 in Wien u. a. für das "Neue Wiener Tagblatt", die "Neue Freie Presse" und das "Neue Wiener Journal" tätig. Ab 1940 in New York lebend, war Breuer als Theaterkritiker für europäische Tageszeitungen und den Berliner Sender RIAS, von 1962-91 auch als Musikreferent für den "Aufbau" in New York und die "New York Times" tätig.
