Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Jos. Futterer mit bestem Gruß".

An Impressionist associated with Pointillism, Futterer specialized in painting interiors, landscapes and flowers, but was also an accomplished draftsman and caricaturist inspired by Bavarian tavern life, servants, and flower sellers on the street, which marked his work with a certain degree of social criticism.

Signed both on recto and verso. Traces of 2 postmarks. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
