Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Wat sall so'n Spehlkrahm? [...]".
A Lübeck-born realist artist, Pagels operated his own studio in Berlin from 1905 and undertook study tours to France and Italy. The "Hühnerdieb" fountain in Aachen, along with a sculpture group of two bears playing with their cubs at the entrance of Jungfernheidepark and several busts of Adolf Hitler constitute some of his principal works.
Some ink spots; small creases near upper margin and upper left corner. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
