Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Studying in Oslo, Karlsruhe and Munich, Peterssen applied himself to landscape painting. He was inspired by the Norwegian scenery as well as by visits to London, Paris, Skagen and Italy, and was also a talented portraitist, his 1895 painting of Henrik Ibsen constituting one of his major works.

Some small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
