Specialized in genre painting and portraiture, Philippi settled in Rothenburg ob der Tauber in 1906, where he co-founded the "Rothenburger Künstlerbund". A portfolio of high-quality reproductions of his paintings was published by the Kunstwart publishing house, which sparked his nationwide success.
Some pink ink spots; traces of a postmark. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
