Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Rosenthal studied at the Munich Academy from 1865, where he specialized in portraiture and genre painting, examples of the latter frequently featuring a humoristic touch as seen in his 1875 work "He who laughs last, laughs best".
Traces of an angular fold and a few small creases. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
