Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

A representative of Art Nouveau and Symbolism, Strathmann produced illustrations for magazines including "Pan", "Jugend" and "Simplicissimus", as well as flower still lifes. He created a scandal with his 1894/1895 painting "Salambo", which showed a scene from Gustave Flaubert's like-named novel with a snake entwined around a girl.

A few faint ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
