Probably Indian Ocean islands, mid-18th century [ca. 1750].

4to (170 x 240 x 85 mm). 650 ff. Written space ca. 85 x 165 mm; written in black and red in good naskhi in the style peculiar to the islands in the Indian Ocean. 18th century red morocco with fore-edge flap, elaborately gilt-tooled with floral designs.

A beautiful and complete Quran manuscript from the collection of Vincent van Gogh with his etched bookplate of the art dealer and bibliophile Vincent Van Gogh (1866-1911), cousin of the like-named artist. The bookplate was engraved by the Dutch artist Marius Bauer (1867-1932).

Occasional light browning and foxing, but altogether very well preserved. A massive tome, sumptuously bound with excellent provenance.
