First edition of Schmidt's first book publication, containing the three stories "Gadir oder Erkenne dich selbst", "Leviathan oder Die beste der Welten", and "Enthymesis oder W.I.E.H".

Rare, well-preserved copy with the author's autograph inscription in indelible pencil to an employee at the Rowohlt publishing house: "Fräulein Ulrike Kallenrode - dem [getilgt: einzigen] ersten guten Herzen, das ich beim Verlage antraf. Als Dank und zur Erinnerung. / Hamburg, den 12.4.50 / Arno Schmidt" ("To Miss Ulrike Kallenrode - the [deleted: only] first good-hearted person I met at this publishing house. Given in gratitude and as a memento. Hamburg, 12 April 1950. Arno Schmidt"). Includes the rare wrap-around band with the blurb, "Ein neuer junger deutscher Autor" ("A new young German author").

Condition

Some browning due to paper stock; tiny (5 mm) tear to lower edge of title-page; slight paper flaws to lower edge of wrap-around strap; cellophane film has slight damage at rear foot. With a typescript capsule life of the author.
