To the playwright and poet Maurice Pottecher, informing him that he has not yet received "Sakountala" but is eager to get to know the play: "Non, je n'ai pas reçu Sakountala et je vous remercie d'avance de me faire lire cette pièce que j'ai envie de connaître et que, j'en suis sûr, j'aimerai".
Kalisada's Sanskrit drama "Abhijnanashakuntalam" or "Shakuntala" from the 4th or 5th century CE is widely considered the most important piece in classic Indian theatre. From the later 18th century onwards Sanskrit literature attracted a growing interest in Europe, and by the end of the 19th century, Abhijnanashakuntalam had been translated into several European languages. The version mentioned in the letter is probably Franz Toussaint's 1922 translation and adaptation "Sakountalâ, d'après l'œuvre indienne de Kalidasa".
Slightly toned.
