A later German edition of this work first published in English in 1651 (as "A New Magicall Light Discovered and Communicated to the World") and in German in 1693, discussing magic and "the core of alchemy, which discloses the arcane and highly hidden secret of the philosophers' elixir".

The confusion surrounding the pseudonymous "Philaletes" and his writings was resolved only by the research of John Ferguson. The author of the present work is undoubtedly the Welsh clergyman and alchemist Thomas Vaughan (1621-65).
