Roderick Murchison, one of the first scholars to devote himself to the young science of geology, served as director-general of the British Geological Survey from 1855 on until his death. He is noted for investigating and describing the Silurian, Devonian and Permian systems and was one of the first members of the Geological Society, where his colleagues included Charles Darwin, Charles Lyell, Adam Sedgwick, and William Buckland.
