A trip to Egypt for a small group of Swedes or Danes who photographed their way through the Old Cataract Hotel, the pyramids, the river Nile, and journeys by steamship. While many sets of stereograph photos were sold as generic sets for armchair travellers in America and Europe, these are personal souvenirs, documenting not only the Scandinavian party but also the portraits of local Egyptians they met along their way. By the end of the 19th century, tourism to Egypt and the Levant was reaching a peak, and was on its way to becoming a local industry for photographers, guides, hotels, and passenger steamships. This growing industry appears in the backgrounds of these photographs. Views, made three-dimensional with the aid of the included stereoscope, include many scenes in and around the Old Cataract Hotel, still located near Aswan today. Famously, the Cataract Hotel has hosted the likes of Tsar Nicholas II, Winston Churchill, Howard Carter, Princess Diana, Queen Noor, and Agatha Christie.

Condition

Very light wear to stereoscope and edges of cards; all in excellent working condition.
