First edition. This first issue of the regular edition was produced in 6000 copies; during the author's lifetime the entire press run would number 150,000 copies. As early as 1923, Hesse had writtten to Johannes Kleinpaul: "I consider Siddhartha my most valuable book". Today it counts among "the most widely read works of the 20th century - including translations, the press run is in the double-digit millions" (cf. KNLL).

Provenance

Armorial bookplate of the Eyring family from Ebersdorf (Thuringia) on front pastedown: "Friedel Eyring, 1572".

Condition

Insignificant foxing to front flyleaf; lower free endpaper slightly wrinkled. Spine rebound in black cloth with original printed spine laid down, otherwise very well preserved.
