The photograph by Max Halberstadt (1882-1940) was taken in the previous year, at a sitting which also yielded one of the most famous images of Freud, standing and holding a cigar. Halberstadt was married to Freud's daughter Sophie who died in 1920, while pregnant with their third child.
In 1922 Freud was working on "The Ego and the Id" (published April 1923), the last of his major theoretical works, which suggested a new structural model of the mind.
