First illustrated edition, rare: a famous compendium of Judaism that scrupulously describes the religious lives of the German Jewish community in the early modern period. First published in 1603, the "Synagoga" went through various editions, this being the first illustrated one, which predates the more common edition of 1729. The fine engravings show Jewish customs and holidays, including the Sabbath, Passover and Pentecost (Shavuot), as well as circumcision or the redemption of the first-born son; the large frontispiece shows the crowded interior of a synagogue. The work was put together by the renowned Hebraist Johannes Buxtorf (1564-1629), professor of Hebrew at Basel, who was considered the "greatest expert on rabbinic writing among Protestants" (cf. ADB).
