Opening with a splendid illuminated headpiece lined with gold leaf, this manuscript contains a compilation of fatwas by some of the most prominent Ottoman jurists to hold the title Shaykh al-Islam, including influential rulings attributed to Ebussu'ud Efendi (1490-1574 CE), head jurist to Sulaiman the Magnificent and famous for standardizing Ottoman law; Ibn Kemal (1469-1534 CE), and Makiddin Mehmed Efendi (d. 1547 CE). This volume forms a compendium of the judicial thinking of the Ottoman classical age, offering an unparalleled insight into the mechanisms of imperial law, ethics, and daily governance.
