A classic image from Stoneman’s celebrated National Portrait Gallery series, widely disseminated during the Second World War and after, here preserved in a period print with the signature in a strong hand. The verso bears Stoneman’s photographer’s stamp together with a contemporary handwritten presentation note to “The Lady Wavertree C.B.E., Ngongotaha, N.Z., Christmas 1950,” situating this example within Churchill’s postwar circle of admirers and the Commonwealth’s commemorative culture.
An appealing signed example of one of the most recognisable Churchill portraits, combining historical resonance with desirable presentation on the original mount.
