With Alan M. Turing’s signed, dated ownership (July 1933), this copy records his immediate post Cambridge reading in continental analysis. The second, expanded edition of a cornerstone text in complex analysis, uniting Hurwitz’s Zürich lectures with Courant’s Göttingen revisions and his substantial section on geometric function theory; issued as volume III of the newly founded "Grundlehren" series and long a pedagogical standard.

Courant’s editorial programme, undertaken with the assistance of C. L. Siegel, modernized the presentation and integrated power series, conformal mapping, and elliptic functions into a coherent course.

Provenance

Early ownership of Ernest W. Judd, the inscription on front free endpaper struck through; Alan Mathison Turing (1912-1954), with his signature on front free endpaper; Robin Gandy (1919-1995), Turing's friend and one of his executors; bequeathed to Wolfson College. A Fellow of Wolfson from 1970 until his death in 1995, Gandy generously left his entire estate to the College, including this book once owned by Alan Turing, with the wish that his legacy be used to benefit the College and its students. Deaccessioned to fund student support (Turing-Gandy bursary initiative).

Condition

Spine repaired, boards soiled, worn and dust-stained. Some pencil annotations.
