Goethe’s condolence to Herda’s widow in 1802

Fine letter of condolence to the widow of the Eisenach chamber president Carl Christian von Herda. Goethe speaks of the longstanding friendship that bound him to the deceased and of the loss felt both personally and in public affairs, where Herda’s insight and energy will be missed. Goethe reflects that the passing of older friends is the natural order, turning the bereaved back toward the living; he wishes the survivors many healthy and cheerful days:

"Das freundschaftliche Verhältniß, das zwischen dem seligen H. Gemahl und mir, seit mehreren Jahren bestanden, macht mir dessen Verlust äußerst schmerzlich; so wie ihn die Geschäfte, als einen einsichtsvollen und thätigen Mann vermissen werden. Nur die allgemeine Betrachtung: dass unsere älteren Freunde vor uns hingehen, tröstet uns, indem sie uns auf die Lebenden zurückweist und uns den Wunsch abdringt: dass den Überbliebnen noch manche gesunde und heitre Tage gegönnt seyn möchten. Ich hoffe dieses an Ew. Gnaden und an den Ihrigen erfüllt zu sehen, der ich mich zu günstigem und freundschaftlichem Andenken bestens empfehle".
