First edition. A detailed survey of petroleum resources within the British Empire, combining an economic and political analysis of Imperial petroleum policy with a technical account of production off the north-eastern coasts of South America as well as Canada. Henry examines geological formations, drilling methods, refining processes, transport infrastructure, and commercial organization, situating colonial oil development within the broader strategic concerns of Britain on the eve of the Great War.

The work includes prefatory contributions by the Canadian oil magnate William Henry McGarvey (1843-1914) and others, reflecting contemporary industrial and scientific perspectives on petroleum exploitation.
