Early text on numismatics, discussing whether coins were used as medals for commemorative purposes rather than as currency. Erizzo (1525-85), a Venetian scholar and senator, had amassed a substantial coin and medal collection which was the basis for this work. First appearing in 1559, it proved a popular text: this is a re-issue of the 1568 second edition, with reprinted preliminaries. Leaf G1, containing p. 97-98, is prefixed by a section of 278 pages containing the "Dichiaratione delle antiche monete consulari" (which is sometimes found bound at the end instead).

Provenance

Last in a Hungarian private collection.

Condition

Insignificant brownstaining, mainly confined to margins, and the odd fingerstain from contemporary use, but generally well preserved in a later but appropriate binding, possibly of Hispanic origin (endpapers bear 19th century "Thomar" watermark).
