Lenin (Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov). Politicheskija partii v rossii i zadachi proletariata.St. Petersburg, 1917.

First edition. Lenin's popular commentary on Russia's political landscape in the form of questions and answers. Drafted within weeks of the February Revolution, it explains the positions of the major political parties regarding the burning issues of the day. It was originally planned as a leaflet, owing to the fact that the Cadets, Socialist Revolutionaries and Mensheviks were making wide use of leaflets in their propaganda and pasted them up all over town. Lenin believed that a Bolshevik leaflet explaining what every party was and what it stood for should be pasted alongside the anti-Bolshevik proclamations. However, the article turned out to be too long to be issued as a leaflet, and was first published in the Helsingfors Bolshevik newspaper "Volna", then issued in pamphlet form by the Zhizn i Znaniye publishers in 50,000 copies. The proprietors of the printing-press, who sympathised with the Cadets, held up publication, but with the help of the workers' committee the pamphlet was issued on 4 July 1917. Owing to the July events, however, it was hidden away in the publishers' warehouse. A few days later it began to circulate in the working-class quarters. The first edition sold out quickly and a reprint was put out. A second edition was published in Moscow in 1918 with a foreword by Lenin.

Upper wrapper detached; small traces of worming.

Noël, A. D. / Vivien de Saint-Martin, Louis. Carte de l’Empire Ottoman comprenant les possessions de la Porte en Europe, …Paris, 1825.

A large map coving from the Balkans to the Ukraine, the Caspian Sea, Western Persia, Arabia and the Nile. Unusually, the map uses stipple engraving to give texture to the open areas, especially in Arabia. It is also an uncommonly international publication, published in France by the engraver, with the assistance of publishers in other countries: James Wyld and John Cary in London; Artaria & Fontaine in Mannheim; Villardi in Milan; Bouffa & Fils in Amsterdam; and Brunin in Glasgow (a publisher not listed in Tooley’s Dictionary).

Minor defects to the box, slight browning, otherwise in fine condition.

Massi, Hassan al-Fakhani al- / Frem, Saad Mohammed. [Encyclopedia of Arabic Knowledge. The Contemporary Renaissance of the …No place, 1968.

Promotional booklet announcing the publication of an encyclopedia series dedicated to the mid-20th century economic boom experienced in the Gulf countries, especially the oil-rich Trucial coast, soon to become the United Arab Emirates. The overarching aim of the publishers was to promote mutual understanding across the Arab world by making contemporary experience in Muslim nations widely available to the reading public. The Gulf renaissance, spurred by the discovery of vast oil reserves and one of the most dramatic cultural moments of the 20th century, was a natural inclusion.

In excellent condition.

Poulenc, Francis, French composer and pianist (1899-1963). "Emmanuel Chabrier". Autograph manuscript, signed twice.N. p., 1959.

One of only a few literary manuscripts by the eminent French composer, extremely rare in trade. In this paper, which appeared in 1961 at La Palatine publishers, Paris-Genève, Poulenc compresses, as he writes in the preface, "une véritable passion" that he felt from adolescence onwards for Chabrier's music, into a memorial full of warmth, enthusiasm, and linguistic beauty.

The present ms. comprises the preface, the introduction "Portrait de Chabrier", and Chapters I and II (cf. pp. 1-78 in the printed version); Chapters III and IV (in the book pp. 80-119) might have filled another, clearly thinner quarto issue, the whereabouts of which are unknown today and are not established by MGG or New Grove.

Alibert, Jean Louis, Baron, physician to Louis XVIII (1766-1837). ALS.Paris, c. 1830.

Treuttel & Wurtz, publishers and booksellers at Strasburg and Paris, were founded by J. G. Treuttel (1744-1826) and later associated with J. G. Wurtz (1768-1841).
