First edition of Carus's last important work. With full-page autograph signed inscription to the Saxon judge and historian Friedrich Albert von Langenn (1798-1868) on the flyleaf: "Seinem lieben und verehrten Freunde Herrn Präsidenten Dr. v. Langenn Exzellenz zum 26 Januar 1866" and a 14-line poem in hexameters: "Der Du mit sinnigem Blick das Größte wägst und das Kleinste, / Strenge den Schuldigen strafst, doch lieber den Schuldlosen freiläßt! / Auch das Thier ist Dir werth, die ungeflügelte Psyche, / Welchem göttlicher Hauch ersetzt das bewußtvolle Denken; / Dich erfreut seine Regung, zieht an das hohe Geheimnis [...] Endlich löst sich das Siegel, die Binde fällt von den Augen, / Und 'Epheb' am Altar' stellt nun dies Büchlein sich dar".

The physician Carus (1789-1869), a friend of Goethe who was also a psychologist, natural scientist, philosopher, and (under the instruction of Caspar David Friedrich) a painter, made important contributions to the theory of the sub-conscious.
