The earlier postcard to the academic painter and art critic Charles-Olivier Merson, informing him that he has currently no painting available to exhibit in the Exposition de Bordeaux that was curated by Merson: "Veuillez recevoir mes regrets de ne rien avoir de prêt en ce moment pour l'Exposition de Bordeaux pour laquelle vous avez bien voulu n'adresser une invitation. Croyez que je serai heureux d'y participer une autre année." - The letter from 1902 was probably also written to Merson to inform him that a small painting requested for an exhibition was not available: "Je suis très flatté de votre aimable demande et j'ai le regret de ne pouvoir envoyer le petit tableau que vous me demandez ne puvant en disposer - je n'en ai pas d'autre à vous proposer pour le remplacer mais j'espère que l'année prochaine je pourrai répondre à votre gracieuse invitation".
