A letter of condolence to the Viennese civil servant August Nüchtern about the death of Nüchtern's son-in-law, the Carinthian historian Michael Tangl (1861-1921), who had unexpectedly passed away on September 7th after contracting dysentery while visiting his native country: "[...] Es ist schrecklich, ein schwerer Verlust für unsere Wissenschaft, speziell auch für die Monumenta Germaniae und für die Pflege der histor. Hilfswissenschaften in Deutschland [...]".
The Tyrolean archivist and medievalist Redlich, like Tangl an important editor of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica, was considered the leading Austrian historian of his age.
